So there has been news that Windows Phone 7.8 would be made available today at a certain time.

When the time hit, Zune reported no updates… I decided to give the “Disconnected Internet” trick a shot. and BAM an update is available! Right now I’m going to OS Version 7.10.8779.8 but I’m assuming this is a prerequisite for Windows Phone 7.8.

To force the update:

1) Turn off cellular data, and Wifi on your Lumia 900.

2) Connect to Zune, check for updates. It won’t detect one.

3) Change to a different tab other than update in the settings.

4) Disconnect phone, then reconnect it.

5) Now, get ready. You will need to hit the “Update” button and unplug the network cable from your computer exactly 2 seconds after hitting this button. It will present an update is available!

6) Reconnect internet, then hit Update!

7) Now update!

8) Repeat a few times, I’ll post how many updates there are below!

You will need to perform this a bunch of times to make sure that all the prerequisite updates and 7.8 itself gets installed! I’m updating this post as I’m performing this! If you don’t have luck, keep trying! I think the update servers are getting hammered pretty hard, so this may have an effect on plugging the internet at the right time!

First Update (to):

Second Update (to):

Third Update (to):

I’ve had to perform the trick over 10 times to get these 3 updates! Keep trying if it doesn’t work.

Description for the 3rd update looks like it is Windows Phone 7.8. I’ve embedded a screenshot below:

Update for Lumia 900 on Rogers using Zune Disconnect Trick. Third update is 7.10.8858.136

Update for Lumia 900 on Rogers using Zune Disconnect Trick. Third update is 7.10.8858.136

  1. Ok, I done that trick one time, I clicked update. But now in that grey window it is stuck on Checking for updates. Should I retry?

  2. Just sit and wait for it to complete! If it errors out, or says there’s no more updates, keep trying the trick (precisely as instructions say) above until you’ve done 3 updates!

  3. It says it cant connect to the phone or something when i unplug the internet.

  4. What is the specific error? If it says it can’t check for updates, try again… I had to do the trick over 10 times just to get 3 updates.

  5. 80072EFF We could connect to the update server.

  6. Try again, that’s all I can say! Make sure you are giving it exactly 2 seconds after checking for updates and unplugging your network cable!

  7. Wow, so my first impression of Windows Phone 7.8: They messed with the touch screen acceleration! *face palm*…

I thought they fixed this way back. Now you have to slide numerous times to scroll, ugh πŸ™ Not happy!

  8. Instead of 2 seconds I took 5 and it is doing a update

  9. That’s good to know! Thanks for posting πŸ™‚ Let us all know how it goes!

  10. Works like a charm. I also had to wait exactly 5 seconds. Thanks! πŸ™‚

  11. That’s awesome! Glad to hear!

  12. Well in zune update check. it is stuck for me on Checking for updates, and doing nothing more…

  13. Worked for me with the 2second on my Lumia 900 πŸ˜€

  14. You have to be patient and wait! Sometimes it took a couple minutes when doing “checking”.

  15. That’s awesome Jo!

  16. In step 5, where is the Update button? On my phone or in Zune?

  17. The update button is inside of “Update” tab in Zune.

  18. First update worked fine (after 3 tries) on 3 seconds, the second update I just cant seem to get working though! If I wait anywhere between 1-15 seconds it says that it cant connect to the update server, a bit longer and it says I’m up to date. Suppose I’d better just keep on tryin’.

  19. Hmm weird. I somehow went directly to the second update. Now I’ve tried like 20 times and can’t get zune to find the final update. Did anyone else go to the second update directly?

  20. Hi Donald,

That’s all you can do bro, just keep trying! The perfect amount for me was 2 seconds, but other people are reporting different intervals. I think the fact that there’s probably TONS of people updating right now, might mean there is a delay with the servers as well which could cause some issues with the perfect timing.

    Keep trying bud,

  21. Hi abc84211,

The amount of 3 updates in some of our cases could be due to our providers. There’s a chance that with your provider there may only be 2 updates instead of 3 (I could be wrong). I wouldn’t be concerned as I doubt it would skip a needed update.

I’d keep going till you get to 7.8 though!

  22. I finally got it to work. After waiting 2 seconds, I turned my wifi off, then every 5-6 seconds or so, I would turn wifi on for 1-2 seconds before turning it off. Did this over and over again until the update was finally found.

  23. That’s awesome abc84211 πŸ™‚ Glad to hear you got it working!

  24. Anyone lucky with an HTC? (or even HD7?)

  25. It have worked for me! I have a Lumia 710 and I’m from Argentina!

  26. My Zune says Can’t check for updates right now. Please try again later. An update is in progress. Wait until it’s complete. C101007B Is this the update and nothing is happening??

  27. hmm,

I actually havent heard od that happening. Maybe Zune is updating itself.

Try closing out of Zune and go back in.

  28. i do the update to 7.10.8783.12 but i cant succes for the third..wtf?

  29. I’m on my work network – i will wait until i’m home and see if that’s the issue – i’ve tried the cable trick but is it unplug the phone from the PC or unplugg the PC from the network at step 5?? Thanks!!

  30. This worked for me for my Lumia 800, locked on T-Mobile UK. Thanks!

  31. I thought I should update this…I am in the US, have a Lumia 900 that was unlocked from AT&T and is now on a different carrier, so I assumed that there wasn’t any way AT&T could/would ever push the update to me. I used your method; I have never been able to get this trick to work in the past. However, it worked perfectly and after two upgrades, it says I am on 7.8. About the only difference I see is in the start screen. Thanks, since this had never worked for me i the past I would never have tried it again.

  32. Update went well, but for some reason I’m unable to connect to better than EDGE….

Rebooting, turning airplane mode on, didn’t help.

I had to hard reset the phone to fix LTE issues as it was unable to connect to LTE since day1 I had the Lumia 900..

I’ll try that again to see if it help

  33. Mine works and goes to the Nokia update then fails at transferring update…

  34. This worked with my L900 on AT&T. Thanks!

Andrew, are you turning Wi-Fi on again after it detects the update? I forgot to one time and the update failed. I had to start over getting it to detect it again.

  35. On the phone?

  36. holy crap it works.. updating now!

  37. Once , I remove the cable from computer after waiting for 2 sec after i click update, i get a message saying, “to view this setting, connect a device”.

  38. Got the message, i was removing the usb cable that connects phone, instead of removing ethernet cable

now i got the update message

  39. Great Post!
Rogers, Nokia, and Microsoft should be grateful to individuals such as yourself (and the user community in general). If I had to rely solely on their support (big 3), I would have trashed my Windows Phone shortly after purchase and visited my local Apple Store.

  40. I’m up to update 2. I find you need to disconnect everything and give it 5 minutes wait before trying to do it again. I’ve been able to wait up to 5 seconds before I need to disconnect from the net. Kudos and thanks.

  41. forget the tutorial try this
    disconnect pc from internet
    open wifi on phone
try update and fter 5secs enable airplane mode

  42. If some other people can confirm that the method 3ftw works, please post. I’d love to update the above post to list this as another method…

    Thanks 3ftw

  43. Now my phone is updated to 7.8. Thanks for the tip.

  44. No prob Sue, glad it worked!

  45. My god, that took me over 30 tries!!! But finally updating the last one.

  46. With this method Bluetooth Share doesn’twork still saying you need to update, i think because is missing the firmware update.

  47. Hey, Do you know if this works with the Nokia Lumia 710 on T-Mobile USA. I tried countless times and no result. After i disconnect the internet after 5-7 seconds, it would come to a connection error, where i need internet connection.
Just wondering if i was the only one.

  48. I don’t think this has anything to do with the update method. I think this could be an issue with the version available to Rogers customers possibly. I heard the same thing happened to other users.

  49. Took about 7 tries in total, but all 3 updates successfully installed on my Lumia 800 here in UK.
Many thanks for the great advice and tutorial πŸ™‚

  50. The problem is firmware, every user like me that get WP7.8 but not the new firmware (1240) don’t have Bluetooth Share. I think the app of Nokia check the firmware and not the version of WP.
This already come in the past with internet sharing.. Every user update without the firmware don’t get internet sharing.

  51. Hi Ameer,

It should work if the update exists! Again, for me I used 2 second timings, and it worked. Keep trying!

  52. Since I’d posted about having issues earlier, I thought I would say how I, after at least 100 attempts, managed to get 7.8 working. I had put flight mode on, and waited 5 seconds before turning my wifi off while looking for updates, worked first time, for the last 2 updates. I love being able to customise more stuff.

  53. OK, I keep trying your steps, for step 5 I unplug the network connection and it cant connect to the update service. Is it trying to use the phone??

  54. Hi Mark,

You hit the update button in Zune, then you disconnect your computer from the Internet. You don’t touch the cable between the phone and the computer.

  55. But you need to count exactly 2 seconds from when you click the update button, between when you un plug the network cable.

  56. Im trying it from Holland. Not working. No matter how many seconds I wait. Zune gives an error that the phone is not connect or that I do not have an internet connection..

Nokia and wp are starting to annoy me more and more..

  57. Ok, I comment what I did. Was similar than original steps but skipping some ones.
1.Connect the phone to the pc and open Zune (If it doesn’t open automatically).
2.Go to the update option into settings.
3.Wait about 4 seconds and turnoff wifi. (check time review below in this comment)
    4. If doesn’t work, change selected option (go to another one like “sync groups”) and repeat from step 2.

I realized that the time to turn off the wifi (or unplug the cable) should be about 1/2 to 3/4 part of the total time zune takes to check updates. The total time depends on you connection speed, so 2 seconds could be too long as too short.

I’ve had to do this a few times for each update.

    Hope this helps!!!

  58. Still getting the message that my pc is not connected to the internet time and time again

  59. Trying this on a Lumia 800 in UK on Vodafone. First updated applied via Zune without trying the above. No more updates since then (after about 5 hours). Waiting any longer than 2 seconds after clicking on “Update”, Zune goes straight to an ‘up to date’ message.

  60. I’m sure the MS update servers are just getting hammered right now. So this might be what is causing some of the issues that people are having.

All I can recommend is to keep trying. I had to do this over 5 times to get the first update. The second came easily (after 3 tries). The third update, I had to perform the trick over 10 times…

  61. Had to try a few times, but it worked like a charm.
Running an unlocked AT&T Samsung Focus rev1.4 on Bell (Canada)

  62. Okay this is not working for me and I don’t know what I am doing wrong…

  63. just try this method and it worked!!!! lumia 900 personal argentina, updating now, its all about the timming and i can confirm its 2 seconds regards πŸ™‚

  64. This works great.. You need to get timing right. I am now running 7.8 ..Don’t wait for Rogers to push the update,,,Thank you for the info

  65. Had to comment. Rodrigo (No. 7) nailed it! It’s dependant on your internet speed. About 3/4 of the time it takes to check for an update is when you disconnect the network connection.

    First update on its way!

  66. Nice! This worked for me…the trick like Timmy said is to disconnect it at 3/4 the time it takes to check for an update….ROGERS LUMIA 900…I didn’t get 3 updates but rather 2…one that said Nokia Update and the 2nd being 7.8

  67. THANKS! This worked for me… AT&T Lumia 900. Northern California. It was 3.5 seconds for me.

  68. Confirmed for me in DC. took just two updates to get to build 8858 though, if that helps.

  69. Nice, vodafone in the Netherlands and it runs smoooothhhh

  70. Thanks everybody for sharing your hints and experiences, I’ve got the first update running now. Updating your phone shouldn’t be this hard…

  71. Didn’t work with the Mac Windows Phone software but after trying 5 times on a PC it worked and it’s downloading right now- thanks for the tip!

  72. If I put the phone on to flight mode – zune tells me it has problems connecting to the update services…if I turn data back on it just tells me I’m up to date ?

  73. Hi Carlos_C,

I’m not sure if it’s “flight mode” that’s causing your issues. Instead of using flight mode, try what I suggested in the instructions. Simply turn off Wi-Fi, and then disable cellular data.

  74. 4 seconds is the magic number for me

  75. My AT&T Samsung Focus is still not updating. My Lumia 900 was updated with this trick.

  76. It worked! In L900 by Rogers. The normal time on my PC was 9s, so I left with about a 3 to 4s. As the amount of atulizaçáes not matter since it’s the last 8858.136 because the updates are cumulative, all in one comes earlier.

  77. Used with the flight mode

  78. Nope …disconnected – switched off wifi – then data, reconnected – checked for updates – wait about 40 s and then get “can’t check for updates right now. Please try later -we are having trouble connecting to the update service”

So I try unplugging network with the phones data turned on and then checking for updates – it tells me my phone is up to date….which seems to me that it’s checking the update status through the phones’ 3g and not checking via the lan….really odd

  79. Worked with me on my Lumia 800, took like 2 hours though but installing the 3rd and last update now πŸ˜€ thanks for the post

  80. Can’t seem to get the timing right :'(
    (lumia 800)

  81. SWEDEN.
    Updating 2/3 right now! Happy:)

Can cinform that 2sec is correct, as long as the total “update search time” is 3sec. Took me a while to get the timing, but it works:)

  82. I have a unlocked Nokia lumia 900 at Rogers but when I get the update is available on my phone it won’t let me update anything, please help

  83. Wow! That ACTUALLY worked! Thanks! Wind Mobile Lumia 710 πŸ™‚

  84. works on my end, I think it depends on the speed of your internet. Our service here has the basic speed, it takes 8 secs to check an update, I turn off wifi on my laptop after 6 secs. able to update it with 8 tries. thnx for this info Steve and to Rodrigo, your shortcut works. πŸ˜€

  85. Does this method work for the Samsung Focus Flash i677? Is it even available for my device? I’ve been trying for hours.

  86. Just commenting to say thanks, this worked for me.

if you having trouble, run the update thing a few times timing it. I had to wait a day until the times were consistent, then let it run for 3/4 of however long and you should be good to go. took about 3 tries for the first update, 2 for the second (I only had 2)

  87. Yeah this really works here in Finland too πŸ™‚ . Just updating my 710.

  88. worked for me in Slovenia with Lumia 900! You need to wait 4 seconds before unpluging the ethernet!

  89. This work, thank a lot for stephenwagner and NOKIA!! and Microsoft too!

  90. i’m from indonesian:D this work

  91. worked for me too.

I found it was about 4.5 seconds with my connection speed. Thanks or the tip!

  92. Update in progress :p

Had to turn the flight mode on!

    Thank you guy πŸ˜‰

  93. Samsung Omnia 7 upgraded from 7.5 -> 7.8 successfully.

    Thanks for the instructions!! πŸ™‚

  94. I’ve been trying this a bunch of different ways on my HTC Trophy here in the US, but when I check for updates, I can hardly count to 2 before it returns the result that I’m up to date. So I’ve tried disconnecting immediately after clicking back to update from elsewhere, and that returns the message that I can’t connect to the update service right now. If I wait longer than about a second to do the disconnect, it still just says that my phone is up to date. I’ve tried this with both flight mode on and just wifi/data manually turned off. Any other ideas?

  95. Dude thank you!!!!!
    I managed to get the time right ( I did 1, a, b, c, 2, a, b, c) and I had to for 3 updates then another Nokia update automatically installed,
So thank you again I can’t believe something like that would work!!
    Lumia 800 Vodafone UK.

  96. I did the update trick and my phone said i have an update so i connected my computer back to the internet and then it said my phone is up to date…. πŸ™ i must be doing something right since my phone said that therre was an update…what am i doing wrong

  97. Nokia lumia 900 ( France ) upgrade successfully . Thank you. It’s ok for me with the method of “Rodrigo”:

=> “1.Connect the phone to the pc and open Zune (If it doesn’t open automatically).
2.Go to the update option into settings.
3.Wait about 4 seconds and turnoff wifi. (check time review below in this comment)
    4. If doesn’t work, change selected option (go to another one like β€œsync groups”) and repeat from step 2.

I realized that the time to turn off the wifi (or unplug the cable) should be about 1/2 to 3/4 part of the total time zune takes to check updates. The total time depends on you connection speed, so 2 seconds could be too long as too short. “<= this method work very good.. Thanks

  98. It works. Thanks dude!

  99. Do I need to plug in and out for the phone again, when it dont come a update and I get?

  100. Hi Jim,

If by chance the computer didn’t state that an update was available, you want to restart the whole process all over again.

  101. After about 1.5 hour I finally made it. you have to wait 3/4 of full upgrade check time.

  102. That was an awesome trick. It worked on my Lumia 900 At&T mobile.

  103. excellent..! it worked!!!! it just took me a 30-40 times to do the trick for the last update… well .worth it..!

  104. Thanks the instructions you gave were perfect!, it was very fast to find the update each time. It only took me a couple tries for the first two and one try for the last.

    Lumia 710 on Rogers

  105. Worked! Took me about an hour or so….

  106. Thanx m8! Really happy to get this update on my Lumia 900(sweden). πŸ™‚

  107. Nothing yet in Boston on ATT L900…!

  108. Update Error at the completion
    Error Code 80180048
    what does it mean……..?

  109. Can’t believe this actually works! Cheers

  110. awsom guidance………………it works…………….thnx

  111. It works in HONG KONG too!

  112. Heyyy… Thanx a lot buddy… I’ve updated my Samsung OMNIA W I-8350 using your help.. first it shows 8778.9 and then 8785 and finally it showed 8858.136 as update… πŸ™‚

  113. Amazing … worked after about 5-6 tries … but it was all worth it …

    Thanks a lot !!!

  114. using a htc radar, tried the steps as mentioned above but couldnt update.. its been 2hours till now.. frustrated.. help required.. when i disconnect network it gives ” can’t check for updates right now – 80072EFF” if i am disconnecting late it shows ” your phone is up to date”. i have tried all 4, 5, 6, 7 seconds.. no go πŸ™

  115. Absolutely amazing. Works quite well. Thanks Stephen!

On my system I had to wait about 3-4, maybe 5 seconds.

Also, I found that I didn’t have to physically disconnect the phone between attempts — which saves time if you’re retrying over and over.

    Here’s my method…

On the Zune settings page, click on “Name Your Phone” (but, don’t change the name), and then click back to “Update” — wait the 3-4 seconds and then disconnect the network cable. Once disconnected, you may have to wait up to 12-15 seconds for the result, which says “An update is available for your phone.” πŸ™‚

If you are too quick in disconnecting, the “Checking for updates…” will ultimately time-out, and you will get a message “Can’t check for updates right now. Please try again later”. –> that means you need to wait longer before disconnecting the network cable. Try again.

If you are too late in disconnecting, it will tell you “Your phone is up to date.” –> that means you need to disconnect the network cable sooner. Try again.

    Be patient, it works.

  116. I am not able to do force update to my Samsung Omnia W. Is there any other way to do it?

  117. I’ve tried it, but it doesn’t work, i don’t know if it works in Chile-Latinoamerica…
My phone is new, it’s a Lumia 710, does anyone have one to know if it works in every kind of phone?
Thank you…. I really want to update it, because everytime I check for updates it says it’s ok.

  118. when it’s updating, phone info will be delete it?
I mean I will lost everything??

  119. Hi Earthfusion,

If you do it this way, you won’t lose anything. It does the normal upgrade (it even takes a backup of your phone) :).

As for Caro, if it keeps saying it’s up to date, then chances are you aren’t unplugging the internet fast enough…

  120. I can confirm that it works on a Lumia 610. Worked on 1st attempt. All I did was to disable the network adapter on my PC after about 2 seconds.

  121. Hi All

Along with three updates i have received Nokia update for windows phone. what is it ?

  122. LG Optimus7 European unlocked model. Works as expected, though it is difficult to get the correct timing. In my PC it seems there are two different possibilities. Some times it takes about 15 seconds to check for updates. If that is the case you have to unplug the network at ~13 seconds. Some other times it takes only 5 seconds. In that case its somewhere between 2 to 3 seconds. Thank you for the post. Really appreciated.

  123. It worked for my omnia w in india!!

  124. works !!! tried it on the samsung omnia w from bangalore… works !!! for the first update.. fingers crossed.. also yeah u dont need to physically remove the device as mentioned in one of the comments above… THANKS

  125. It took me along time, but it actually all worked for my HTC Mozart.

  126. Got it to work well once I read a few comments. Once I got an idea of how many seconds my system took to tell me my lumia 900 was up to date, I severed my internet connection a little less than two seconds before I would have got the update message. Only had to repeat two or three times between each update.

  127. Thanks buddy. I was first a bit sceptical, but it sure did work! So, BIG thanks to you.

However, I must comment that it should not be this difficult to execute a simple update on your mobile. Thus Nokia (and be aware, I am a Finn), please get your act together and fix the apparent bug in Zune. Not good…

  128. Wow, it really worked! thanks bro!!

  129. Ive tried and got only upto 7.10.8779.8 stage…..
do I need to disconnect reconnect setps for each stages of the forced updates??

  130. Hi Paul,

For every update, you needs to repeat all steps.

  131. thnks a lot got all the updates installed sucessfully πŸ˜€

  132. I am so eager to try this trick…I would like to ask though…Can anyone provide feedback on 7.8’s functionality? Are you hitting those live tile issues…Is the OS as crisp and responsive as 7.5?

Any feedback on the 7.8 experience (particularly AT&T Nokia Lumia 900) would be greatly appreciated!

  133. to15 Veronica Lario, ur method worked for me.

PS guys, actually u dont need to physically disconnect the network cable, disabling it in network connections manager works pretty well.

  134. I tried this but since the update check only takes 3 seconds its kind of hard to time it. anyone else on Rogers (Canada) manage to get the upgrade?

  135. Rogers Canada… had 7.8, had bug for MMS on T-Mo, finally got the Network Setup app, that caused more problems, no more WiFi sharing and had to frequently restart to get MMS.

Finally put on Telcel LTE firmware which sent me back to 7.5.

However… cannot do the update to 7.8 in any way shape or form. I think MS may have pulled it.

  136. Funciona muito bem . . . .
vc so precisa acertar o momento de desligar o cabo da internet, esse tempo varia conforme a velocidade da sua internet, no meu caso entre 10 e 15 segundos.

  137. thanks, Stephen. It worked on my lumia 900 in Australia after just a few attempts. I was wondering how this trick works and why Zune cannot update it automatically. NOKIA website fools everyone saying “the availability of this update may depend on your network service provider”. Luckily, I found your blog. Thanks again. πŸ™‚

  138. do we need to login to zune using Hotmail/outlook id before following this process?

I am unable to update my Omnia W.

  139. Yahooooo! Wreszcie dziaΕ‚a… POLAND T-Mobile Lumia 900 GOOOOD!

  140. Thank u All. Last night I have updated my Lumia 610 Successfully. One IMPORTANT NEWS. Microsoft as launched new update recently it is, 7.10.8862.144 which fixes live tile bug issue. As of now my Lumia 610 working fine with Windows 7.8 update. I am from INDIA.

Guys, Please post ur windows 7.8 experience,, if any bugs are there? I am happy n Worrying too as I don’t know whether it has any bugs.. πŸ™‚ πŸ˜€

  141. There has to be a better way to do this, I only get “Can’t check for updates…” or “Your phone is up to date..”. No joy.

  142. i got error while updating lumia 800 to 7.10.8373.12
i tried hard reset but same error
    what should i do ?

  143. Guys anybody tried 8862 update released on march 14th? I tried till 8858 and updated my phone 3 times in total to get it. No need to disconnect your phone. My phone Samsung Omnia W from India

  144. From Portugal i have updated to 7.10.8862.144 my Samsung Omnia W called GT-I8350.
    Many Thanks

  145. i spen da whol night fo gettin tis wp7.8, tanks…gudnyt all, its 4:30am….WP rock\m/

  146. Thanks so much! It took a few tries but worked on my Luma 900 which is locked to Rogers in Canada, thanks again!!

  147. Hi Stephen

Thanks for the heads-up. this worked for me – albeit the “waiting period” before the disconnect I found on the first time was 2 seconds, with the last update was about 4 seconds.

How did you figure this one out, this must be a bug in the Zune software.

Anyhow – thank you for assisting us progressing to 7.8.

  148. Thank you for this awesome tip! I am from the Philippines and I have been waiting since January to update my Lumia 800’s WP7.5 to WP7.8. I had to do the process 30-40 times to get all the updates but it’s all worth it! πŸ™‚

I love my new Lumia 800 running WP7.8 (OS Version 7.10.8862.144)!!! And I got a new phone case from London which really made it look new! Yay!!

  151. works in Egypt too, stupid Zune, love the software though

  152. Perfect. Worked in the uk lumia 900 sim free. Appears that the first pre requisite download is almost a flood gate. Once i had that one by the time the phone had done its reset and told me to disconnect it was advised another download was available. The final step after the final window 7.8 now appears to be nokias firmware update as well.

Many thanks for the article. Big help to everyone i think
